If you have decided on an engagement shoot then that’s great news! I love doing them. There’s something really special about focusing on two people in love. I always look forward to my engagement shoots with my lovely couples but they don’t always share that excitement. That’s mainly due to being super nervous at the thought of being photographed.
Engagements shoots are generally lower key then wedding days. There’s always things happening around you on a wedding day & although it’s your day there are lots of other things to focus on as well. Engagements shoots don’t have that hustle & bustle of a wedding day. It’s the two of you & that’s it!
That is probably going to send chills down your spine, but it really doesn’t have to. As it’s just the two of you it means I can spend more time with you easing you into the whole thing.
Follow these tips if you have decided to book a shoot with me & I promise it won’t be all that scary! 😉
Where’s The Best Place To Do The Shoot?
To be honest, it’s really up to you. Do you have a place that means a lot to you? If you happen to be at all nervous avoid places that are going be really busy. Think about any areas that you like, are they urban or rural?
If you love the idea of a beautiful open landscape, try to think about what’s there. You want to find somewhere that has interesting features. Beautiful trees, buildings & sculptures always provide a great backdrop & plenty of creative opportunities.
If you are really struggling with ideas I’m always happy to give you some suggestions of new places & ones I have been to before.
What Time Shall We Arrange It For?
There are a few times during the day where light is it at’s most beautiful – although, light can be interesting & beautiful at any time of the day.
Just before sunrise & just after sunset gives off the most stunning, soft light.
I am happy to do the shoot whenever is best for you.
What Are We Supposed To Wear?
The best thing to do is to wear something you are comfortable in – make sure it fits nicely & you really like the outfit. You don’t want to spend the engagement shoot feeling self conscious & uncomfortable.
Bold colours are always a winner as they look awesome against pretty much any backdrop. If you don’t want to wear bold colours or don’t normally wear them don’t worry – as long as you wear something you love you will look awesome!
Dressing up a bit is always lovely & really makes the engagement special but you know what, if you don’t want to that’s fine too.
Wear comfy shoes if you can as we do tend to walk around a fair bit looking for awesome locations. The less you can bring with you the better – try not to bring bags because as a general rule I don’t photograph when you are carrying bags & I won’t have the hands to carry them for you as I have my own equipment bags to carry. Also, try not to fill your pockets full of stuff as you will be able to see them on the photographs.
So What Will We Do On The Shoot?
The best way to start is to have a quick walk round the location & while we are doing that we can have a chat about what’s going to happen.
I’ll have a look for interesting spots & backdrops & primarily where the best light is & we will start there. I will start by putting you in the best light & asking you to interact with each other – whether that’s kissing & cuddling or sharing a laugh & a joke – whatever works for you as a couple is what creates the most magic.
As I’m photographing you I’ll ask you a few questions that will help you interact with each other in the most natural way. Don’t worry, it may sound cheesy but it really isn’t, it’s done in such a way that you won’t feel uncomfortable.
It’s great if we can use the engagement shoot to chat over what the plan is on your wedding day – we can grab a tea or coffee & chat about your wedding plans.
Engagement shoots needn’t be scary – they are a great way to get to know each other & hang out before the big day.
